Cracking the ABC Code Case Study "Edward"

Cracking the ABC Code Case Study

"Edward" was a non reading midway through Year 2. He started level 1 working about 10 mins per day 4 days per week. By the end of Year 2 he was reading PM level 4. The program continued ninto Year 3 and at the end of Year 3 he was reading PM 20 - reading age of 7.5 -8 years. This is significant progress having made minimal progress for 2 years. The  program continued into Year 4 and at the end of the year he was tested on PROBE and scored 8.5-9.5 years. Which was year level appropriate. "Edward" was now able to read at a functional level in  the classroom to access learning materials.

"Adam" came to me in Year 4 after the lockdowns here inon the Gold Coast. Duirng the time working from home his family were increasingly concerned by his lack of progress in reading. Based on his initial testing I started him on Cracking the abc code Level 1. He has now almost completed level 2. His results are as follows:

August 2020 5y 7m

December 2020 6y 8m

June 2021 7y 1m

While he is still working significantly below his peers he had made considerable improvement over the 18 months. Note: His comprehension scores are in line with his reading.

Cracking the ABC Code Case Study "Andy"

Cracking the ABC Code Case Study

"Andy" ( a year 2 student) was referred to me following an assessment by the Educational Psychologist who had diagnosed Dyslexia. At ths his assessment he scored 9th percentile in word reading. (This means that 91% if the population would score higher for his age.) He has recently been retested and is now scoring at the 14th percentile. This is great progress in the 12 months he has been attending tutoring.

"Andy" has been working on Cracking the ABC Code level 1 and 2A. More recently I have moved him to level 2B as he is making good progress and needs to be challenged further.
Cracking the ABC Code Case Study 'Florence"

Cracking the ABC Code Case Study

Florence"  was refered to me as Year 1 student who was struggling to make gains in reading. She had a few sight words and some sounds but nowhere near the expected level on exiting Prep. I began teaching her using Cracking the abc code level 1. Initially, she was only able to sustain focus for about 30 minutes so often  the units rolled over a few weeks. Her reading was reassessed by the school midway through Year 1 as part of their ongoing review.  At that time she scored 3 months below her chronological age. We had progressed onto Cracking the abc code Level 2A at this time which explores common vowel and consonant digraphs.

On the most recent testing, a year later she has maintained her reading development as is now reading age appropriate. However, as the youngest in her class she is still having some difficulties as many students are a year older than her. We have recentlyy moved to Level 2B to provide her with more challenging words to read to ensure she continues to make the expected progress.

"Nancy" started working with me early 2021. The sessions  have been weekly alternating between face to face and Microsoft Teams. This has been an effective way to fit in lessons during school hours and not miss the same lesson each week.
At the beginning of the year "Nancy's" reading was assessed at 6 years 0 months and comprehension at 6 years 5 months. (Chronological age 10 years). Most recent testing (after 6 months) has shown significant growth. Nancy is now reading age 8 years 5 months and comprehension 9 years 8 months. "Nancy" has been completing Level 2B of Cracking the ABC Code.
Her spelling has also made good gains from 6 years 11 months to 7 years 5 months in the same time.

"Teresa" ( a Year 4 student) started working with me in January 2021. Her reading age was assessed at 7 years 5 months. At the end of Term 3 she had improved signifcantly and is now reading age 9 years 3 months and her vocabulary isage appropriate. In the same time she has improved her spelling from 8 years 11 months to 9 years 4 months.  "Teresa" has completed book 3A of Cracking the ABC code and will move to Level 3C in 2022 as we consolidate her reading and spelling skills.
Her brother "Daniel" (a year 2 student) has also been working with me on a weekly basis. He started the year reading age below 6 years and is now reading age 6 years 10 months.  In the same time his spelling has improved by a whole year, from 6 years 5 months to 7 years 5 months.  He has completed the Level 2A program and will progress to Level 3A in 2022.
